What Is a Light Rigid (LR) Licence?

A Light Rigid licence allows you to drive two-axle vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8,000kg. This includes vehicles like small rigid trucks, larger buses, and heavy delivery vehicles. In Queensland, an LR licence is the next step up from a standard car licence (C class) and is required for a growing number of trade, delivery, and transport roles.

Common vehicles that require an LR licence include:

  • Small rigid trucks and tippers
  • Larger delivery vehicles and vans over 8T
  • Mini buses and shuttle vehicles
  • Refrigerated freight vehicles

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Light Rigid truck licence in Queensland?
A Light Rigid (LR) licence is a Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR) licence class that authorises you to drive two-axle rigid vehicles with a GVM over 8,000kg. It sits above the standard car licence and below Medium Rigid (MR) in the Queensland licence hierarchy.
How long does it take to get an LR licence?
It depends on your starting experience. Some candidates are ready to sit the practical test after a single warm-up session. Others prefer two to four hours of lessons before testing. Channan will assess your ability in the first session and give you an honest timeline.
What is the difference between an LR and MR licence?
An LR licence covers rigid vehicles with a GVM over 4,500kg up to 8,000kg. An MR licence extends this to rigid vehicles over 8,000kg, allowing you to drive heavier trucks carrying larger loads. If your work requires you to operate heavier freight or larger rigid vehicles, an MR licence is the necessary upgrade. Channan offers MR training and in many cases the upgrade can be completed in a single day.
Do I need a medical to get an LR licence in Queensland?
In most cases, no medical is required unless you have a pre-existing condition that TMR requires assessment of. Channan can advise based on your individual circumstances.
What suburbs and regions do you service?
Empire Driving School services the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Ipswich for LR and MR truck licence training. Contact Channan to confirm your specific location.
